On the Workbench…
Mostly orders for keychains this week. Sushi and noodles must be going through a slump. Time to start start building up stock for the holiday rush that starts for me in October.
This begins by sourcing rough stock of popular woods as well as the sustainable exotics that appeal to my clients. These days, I am leaning more towards woods grown in North America, as their harvesting is more easily regulated and costs of shipping easier to recuperate.
The exotics I do buy primarily come from cut-offs from other woodworkers, who make larger projects than I do. It takes a little more work to find these, but I feel a bit greener, giving these would-be scraps another opportunity to shine.
I go through my “save” bins to find beautiful bits for my Exotic Sampler Keychains.
I shape and sand “Hashi Oki”, those little table rests that I offer with my chopsticks. I rip dimensional blank stock to size for chopsticks and keychains, so that they are readily available when the orders start rolling in.
Time to do a bit of retooling and maintenance, so that my shop itself is ready for upcoming production. I had to replace a relay switch in my spindle sander and change dull blades and sanding belts that have lost grit. Clean and organized stuff that has been accumulating on my horizontal surfaces.
I also have to make sure the generator starts, to clear the yard of loose dead wood and brush and make room for possible projectiles, that may need to be put up should a hurricane decide to focus on us.
The air is thick and motions are slowed, but things are getting done as needed.

Sneak Peek Slideshow
In an effort to allay doubts of buying online, I always take a “Sneak Peek” photo of client’s custom orders and send it when they are ready to ship. Here they are!😁
Here are the orders carved and shipped from my DustyNewt workshop this week.

If you are enjoying what you see… I like it hot and black. 😉
