On the Workbench…
This past week has been a test of our hurricane preparedness. I would rather do ten of these test runs than a single “active event”.
This storm, dubbed Debby, has effectively set us on notice. It bought rains in our already saturated central location, but left a wider swath of damage (mainly flooding) in north Florida and Georgia, with its meager CAT1 designation. The next one may come in closer and stronger.
Working at home combines the steps you take at home and work. Our biggest job is to secure anything outside that may not enjoy the blow. Julie’s orchids, potted plants, porch obects d'art and lightweight furniture. We police the outside for loose items that may become projectiles. Close up windows and doors to the best of their 100 year old ability.
With a combined total of over 80 years in Florida, Julie and I stay stocked with water, emergency foods, batteries, medicine, tobacco, etc. So, we set our sights on snacks and things to occupy the hours we be pent up with three cats that are used to coming and going at will.
I charge up all my devices. From my Ridgid cordless drill/vac/blower/charger to my lawn mower/trimmer/pruner to our phone. You never know what tools you will need once the storm passes and you are left to clean-up. We resist buying gas for the generator until the last minute, as I don’t like having that much explosive material around the shop, but we’ll fill the truck.
Had this been an actual event, I would not likely be writing this blog. A power outage in our area is usually resolved within hours, but in cases like hurricanes Charlie and Irma, we have gone 7 to 10 days without juice. Our generator (with extension cords galore) powers our fridge, freezer, a fan, a TV and charges things. This outage is usually accompanied by an internet blackout, so I let any current customers know the skinny as soon as I know the situation on both ends of the storm when possible, via my phone apps if I have to.
Best of luck to the eastern seaboard!
